KU Jayhawks Win Season Opener 4 - 1
Jayhawks Goaltender Outstanding Stopping 42 of 43 Shots
The KU hockey team defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks in their home opener, 4 - 1,
thanks largely to an outstanding goaltending performance by Lucas Renard. Despite being
badly outshot (43 to 23) the Jayhawks prevailed in a penalty filled game, in which they
were short handed for all but 1:43 of the second period.
Jayhawk rookie, Warren Cutbill scored the games first goal to give KU a 1-0 lead three
minutes into the period. Jake Mitchell made it 2-0 seven minutes later, after getting a
heads up pass from last years MACHA leading scorer, Erik Bredesen. The Razorbacks cut
the lead in half when forward Luke Parsons knocked in a rebound shot to make the score
2-1.
One minute later Jayhawk captain, Kevin Kiske scored a power play goal to make the
score 3-1. With 25 seconds left in the period, KU rookie forward, Matt Berard poked in a
lose puck in front of the Razorbacks net to give Kansas a 4-1 lead after one period.
Renard was the difference for KU the rest of the game and was unbeatable in the last two
periods. The Razorbacks outshot KU 20-3 in the second period but couldn’t get the puck
past Renard, despite 7 power play opportunities. KU defenseman Ryan Jobe received a
game disqualification (for fighting) and will not play this afternoon.
